Place your glass. Glass is a full-sized block that is completely transparent to light. You cannot recover the glass block by breaking it, so don't put it down until you're sure you want it there.

Mobs can't spawn on glass. If you want to keep a room in your house dark, use a glass floor to keep yourself safe. You can also make a neat visual effect with glass floors by building them over water or lava.
Snow won't accumulate on glass.
A redstone current can still travel down the side of a glass block that is diagonal to it.
To get light underwater, make a tower from glass blocks. As long as the glass is all connected to glass at the surface, a faint glow will spread through it from the daylight above.
